Sunday Meditations

Psalm 100

Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Black Friday

After 10+ years as a manager in the retail industry, and working countless Black Fridays.  I have no real desire to run on out today to the Black Friday Madness!  But unfortunately, I do have a few things I need to get to complete the now, almost finished, Living Room remodel. We have spent the past week painting, getting "new" furniture and a new TV ( a real spurge after almost 16 years with the same one!).

So, out I go with 2 kids into the craziness for a few tubes of flexible caulk, some toggle bolts and a masonry drill bit so that I can finish the new laminate flooring tonight.

I hope to post later this week - maybe with a picture or 2, and show you our new room!

If you've found any great deals in the Indy area, feel free to leave a comment with the information.

If you haven't gone to CVS this week, there are some great money makers.  Check out Money Saving Mom's post for a list.

Children's Museum of Indianapolis Membership Discount - Today is Last Day

This is the LAST DAY of this promotion.  So if you would like to get a membership at a great deal you can go online and order it on The Children's Museum website.

I think this is a good deal!  Here is the breakdown:

Family Membership = $75 (after discount).   That is only $6.25 a month.  Less than the price of 2 Happy Meals at McDonald's and much healthier!

Family Membership +2 = $100 (after discount).   That is only  $8.34 a month.   Normally a youth ticket is $8.50 per ticket!

I personally like the "+2 memberships"  because we can take visiting Grandparents or friends with us that way.  To purchase an adult ticket is $13.50 so if you would have more than 1 visitor come with you during the year it is worth the extra $25 up front.  (I have added the "+2"onto a regular membership partially into the year,  at a prorated rate- so if you just don't have the extra $25 now that might be an option for you.)

Here is recent post I did on this promotion:

If you have been thinking about a membership to the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, now is a great time to get one!  They are running the following promotion:

"Enjoy a day of fun with the family and feel like a kid.

From Nov. 1 – 26 all of our visitors receive youth admission pricing or $25 off basic and plus memberships. We hope to see you soon.

Please note: offer not valid with any other offers and not available with online ticket purchase."

Don't delay, this offer ends November 26th!

Finding Some Extra Cash!

This past Saturday, I found some extra cash.  It paid for the Thanksgiving turkey, my 4 weekend papers at the Dollar Tree and a few other things I needed.  So - where did I find it?  Actually, at the stores I went to - they gave it to me.

You see I've had several things around here I needed to return and I finally did it!  I took back a few things to the Dollar Tree, since I had bought too many.  I took back some scrapbook supplies to Hobby Lobby that I did not need and got almost $20.

Then to Michael's to return the black frosting.  I decided not to make an actual penguin for Molly's birthday - since black would taste yucky!

I stopped at Office Max and redeemed some of my Max Rewards $ I get for turning in used ink cartridges ($3.00 each) and to turn in 3 more!  I got a cork board for homeschooling from there.

Finally to Walmart and I returned 2 more scrap booking items I didn't need and got a gift card for that.  So, I redeemed the card and bought our Thanksgiving Bird!

If you have some items you bought and didn't need - take them back.  Don't let them collect dust - trade them for a turkey!

Note:
I have a basket I keep near where I do my bills.  I throw any receipt in there that I might possibly need someday.  This has come in handy many times for returns!  When the basket becomes full,  I go through it and see what I can discard and shred.

Menu Planning Monday

This is going to be a very busy week!  We are in the midst of doing some house remodeling and rearranging and we hope to get a big chunk done over the Thanksgiving weekend.  So I've tried to plan some easy meals and also do a little bit of cooking ahead early this week so that on Thanksgiving  I won't have much to cook except the Turkey.

This week I plan to cook ahead:
1. Big batch of pancakes and freeze (DONE! This AM  72 pancakes = 9 breakfasts)
2. Homemade Butter Rolls for Thursday (Done and now cooling - will freeze them tonight)
3. Personal Size Pizza crusts (Maybe tomorrow)

Here's the Dinner Plan for this week:

Monday:
Leftovers from Sunday
Casserole, corn, salad, garlic bread

Tuesday:
Tuna Burgers - these are yummy! Almost like a crab cake sandwich.
Baked Potatoes
Coleslaw (left over from Saturday)

Wednesday:
Personal Size Pizzas

Thursday:
Turkey
Stuffing
Mashed Potatoes
Corn
Rolls
Cranberry Sauce
Gravy

Friday:
Turkey Noodle Soup

Saturday:
Turkey something?

Sunday:
More Turkey something?
(According to how much time I have!)

1/2 Price Book Sale Today - IMCPL Library Service Center

Today there is a 1/2 Price used book sale downtown at the Library Services Center.  This is a great way to get your kids books and a great resource for homeschoolers too!

I stocked up at this sale when my 5 year old was a baby.  He loved books, and still does, but I didn't fret too much if he tore a page in a book I had paid $.50 for!  I felt I could let him enjoy the pages and pictures and not be concerned too much if a few of the books didn't survive.

The book sale will be from 12 - 7:30.  And the Library Services Center is located at 2450 N. Meridian St.,  Indianapolis, IN 46208

You can find out more information on the IMCPL Library's website here.

If you can't make it Friday there will be a $5 a bag day on Saturday from 10 - 4.

Mall Madness? Online Shopping Bliss!

Are you planning to do some shopping this holiday season?  I have quite a bit of my shopping done already but I made a trip out to the mall yesterday to pick-up 2 things that were on sale.  I thought that I could get the items cheaper by actually going to Macy's (rather that making the purchase online) because I had a coupon from a mailer for $10 off a $25 purchase.

An hour or so later, I was leaving the mall promising myself and my 5 year old not to step back inside until December 26th.  The mall was already crazy busy and I did not save more by going there with my coupon, because the 2 items I wanted did not qualify for the coupon.

I would actually have gotten a better deal if I would have just purchased the items online a few days ago!  UGH!  I do not want to go back to that busy, stuff and people filled mall for a long time.  So, I have now decided that the rest of my Christmas shopping will be online as much as possible.

Going to the mall was not actually fun, because I go with a 5 year old who thinks he's Daniel Boone and must hide from the Indians in the forest (of clothing racks) and also with a 1 year old in a stroller - which now does not fit through the aisles because they are jam packed with stuff and with people carrying tons of shopping bags.

Here is how I could have saved money, time and my sanity by buying my new Shark Steam Mop from the Macy's online store.

Macy's ad price was $79.99 both online or in store.  A few days ago I had a code for free shipping online (now expired).  So, if I had ordered my mop online, the price would have been the same and no shipping and I would have used no gas nor would I have bought McDonalds for lunch!  Plus, it would have qualified for an 8% cash back rebate from Ebates - so here's the breakdown.

In Store:
79.99 + tax = $85.59 (+ McDonalds ($6.00), crazy mall, fussy 5 year old, parked way far from door and gas)   Total = $91.59

Online:
79.99 + tax + free shipping = $85.59 - % cash rebate (12.27) =  $73.32

I don't want to tempt you to spend $ you haven't already planning to spend this Christmas, but I would encourage you to consider checking online for the prices of the things you are already planning to buy and see if you could save time, money and your own sanity by doing some online shopping.

And -if you are planning to shop online I suggest you sign-up for Ebates.   Ebates is a free website that gives you money back for things you buy online.  This month, I am expecting a check for over $30.69 from Ebates.

Ebates has a lot of bonus deals going on right now because of the holidays.  First you get a $5.00 bonus just for signing up and then a $10 bonus when you make your first purchase.  Also, many of the stores featured on Ebates are now offering double % rebates (usually Macy's is a 4% rebate and now it is 8%).

You will get your bonus $ sent to you in the form of a check, after make a purchase through Ebates and you've earned at least $5.01 in purchase rebates.   If you are going to make holiday or other purchases online why not get some of the $ back?

Signing up is easy and when you want to shop online you just go to the Ebates website and click on the store where you want to shop.  You can also look on Ebates to see if there are any special deals or coupons too (like free shipping codes).

Ebates simply adds a tracking code and then opens the store's website and you shop and purchase directly from the store's website.  Your account is credited the rebate amount in a few days.  It's that easy!  I wish I would have figured this out sooner!

12 Tips to Save More at the Store!

There are a few things that I do to help cut back just a bit more on my shopping budget and I thought that I would share them with you this morning.   Maybe you could add to my list and give me some new things to do to save!

* Check your shopping cart before you check-out.  Take out any impulse items.  Ask yourself if there is anything in the cart you don't really need or could get for less somewhere else.

* Shop with a list.  Stick to it - unless you find free stuff!

* Take a week off from "sales shopping" every now and then.  You can either just save your grocery $ or sometimes I use those weeks to make a quick trip to Aldi and replenish staple items that rarely go on sale or that never have coupons.  Taking a week off  is also a good thing to do if you overspent the week before.

*Use less.  I just use a little less than the recommended amounts for laundry detergent and fabric softener.   I also use 1/2 lb to 3/4 lb of ground meat in recipes instead of 1 lb.

*Take a calculator and pad of paper and add your spending as you shop.  This could be a great job for an older child to do for you.  Knowing what you are spending will curb impulse items.

*Use cash.  Leave your cards at home and you will have to stick to your budget!

* Have quick suppers in your freezer.  This will help you avoid eating out because you are too tired to cook.  Pre-cooked pizza crust,  soups and chili freeze well and cook up faster than you can hit the drive-thru.

*Shop alone.  Sometimes this is not possible, but it sure is easier to think when you don't have a cart full of little ones begging for the Cap'n Crunch!

At the Check-out...

* I like to use the self check -out.  That way I can check the price on each item as it scans into the register.

* Check as the coupons are subtracted.  Make sure double coupons actually double.

* Check the receipt before you leave the store.  It's hard to come back for a $3 mistake.  Fix it then!

* Politely but firmly ask for errors to be corrected.

If you have a tip to add to the list post it in the comments section!

Menu Planning Monday

Okay, so here is my second time at the Menu Planning Monday.  I have to admit, I wound up not making several of the meals last week and substituted in others because of time or in the case of the Potato Soup planned for Monday, I forgot to buy chicken stock.

I did have a chicken to make broth in the fridge, but that was for my family's favorite - Chicken Noodle Soup, also on last week's menu.  I think I would have risked bodily injury if I messed with the chicken soup chicken - these guys are serious about their chicken noodle soup!  Even the (almost) 1 year old begs for more - she does a baby sign for "more" and jumps up and down in her high chair.  So, that said,  you will see Chicken Noodle Soup very often, until of course the turkeys start going down in price - because Turkey Noodle is even better!

I try to do cooking in large batches, when I can and freeze another meal or eat it again later in the week.  I will really be utilizing that method in this week's menus.

Here is the dinner plan for this week.

Monday- Chili (Actually made BIG batch this weekend for Church supper - (this is what's left) + salad and cornbread

Tuesday - Making BIG BIG pot of Spaghetti sauce.  Spaghetti, salad and bread tonight.

Wednesday- Left over Chili as Taco Salad.

Thursday - Chicken Noodle Soup (broth from freezer made last week) Bread

Friday - Homemade Pizza.  It's going to be a busy day, so I will make some individual pizza crusts up this week and freeze them and I'll just have to top them and bake.

Saturday - Birthday party!  Meatballs with sauce made Tuesday.  (I'll make the meatballs earlier in the week too and stick it in the crock-pot.)

Sunday - Friends over for lunch.   More meatballs.  Jello salad?  Leftover cake.

This is the plan anyway....   What's that famous saying?  Best laid plans of mice and men... (or in this case men-u)

Psalm 34:8  Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;  Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

Sunday Meditations

James 1:17
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Matthew 7:11
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Super Savings Saturday - Lots of Stops, Lots of Savings... $254 in savings

Well, today was shopping day and I made quite a few stops throughout the day, but it was well worth it.  I was able to "double dip" the sales this weekend as many of the stores had both this past week's and next week's sales active!

My first stop was at Kroger:
I was really glad to get the plastic bags!  With coupons and the Mega Sale:
I spent OOP 8.99.
I saved 23.96
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next stop Dollar Tree:
4 papers and some all natural chicken broth.
I spent OOP 6.00  (but I don't count the papers against my grocery budget)
I saved 5.00 ( Papers normally 1.75 and broth 2.00)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Third stop CVS:
I was able to get both the sale price of the large pack of batteries for $9.99 and get the $15 ECB on a $20 Duracell purchase.  I did 4 transactions.

I started with a $25 gift card and ended with $15 in ECB's and paid $10.25 OOP, but I got a ton of batteries and I'm so thankful because we use a lot with the baby swing and I was out!
Spent OOP $10.25
Saved $103.85

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next stop Walgreens.
Again I benefitted from the 2 sale ad being active!  I  bought this past week's cereal deal,  and some other items and used the $2.oo RR + a $1 mc to get the skippy for free. ( The mayo was b1g1, but there was only 1 left so they sold it to me for 1/2 price-  better yet!)

Spent $0 OOP
Spent $19.93 on Walgreens Gift Card
Will receive $16.50 back on monthly rebate
Saved $30
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next to Target:
I bought 15 small packages of Archer Farms coffee (1.14 ea) and used 15 $1/1 coupons

Spent OOP $2.10
Saved $15.00

For some reason I can't get the photo of this to upload but when I took the coffee out of the package and put it into some Folger's plastic coffee cans that I had saved it filled 2 and I had 2 bags left!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FINALLY Meijer:
I bought 4 Kraft Dressings, found some peelies for $1.00 off produce with 2 Kraft dressings, used a coupon for $1 off 2 Kraft Dressings I found here  and then got a $4 off next order coupon from Kraft.  I used that to get most of the canned tomatoes for free.  I plan to go back next week for more dressings and produce.  (Thanks Crystal)

I Spent OOP $15.97
I Saved $19.08

Also forgot to mention I stopped at the bread store:
Spent OOP $1.16

Total Grocery and Household Spending for the week:

Kmart $14.21
Kroger $8.99
Dollar Tree $2.00
CVS $10.25
Walgreens $0
Target $2.10
Meijer $15.97
Bread $1.16
Total = $54.68

Total Grocery & Household Savings for week:

Kmart $70.79
Kroger $23.96
Dollar Tree $2.00
CVS $103.85
Walgreens $30
Target $15
Meijer $19.08
Bread $4.00
Total = $253.68

If you wonder how I did it?  I left my husband and kids in the car happily listening to the Penn State vs. Indiana Football game!  That way I could quickly run in and get the things I wanted!
If you want to know a specific about a deal email me!

TODAY ONLY FREE PHOTO BOOK

Okay, I had to share this.  Today only you can get a Free Photo Book - Thanks to Oprah!

Read the details here.
Get the coupon TODAY here.

Use the coupon by SUNDAY at 11:59 PM.

Thanks to Freebies for Mom.

NOTE:  I just went on the Snapfish website to work on my book and the deadline to create your book has been extended until 11/22/08 at 11:59 pm

Walgreens $5 off $20 coupon for 11/14 & 11/15

Walgreen's released a coupon for this weekend!  It is $5 off $20.  I haven't worked out my Walgreen's monthly deals yet but this should be a good weekend to go.   With the coupon and some manufacturers coupons (MC), I should be able to get my free-after-rebate (FAR) monthly items and add in a few sale items that I need also for free.

If you are going to purchase a FAR item and have a MC and the $5/20 you should wind up with an overage.  This is a good place to buy a few grocery items or other sale items you need for free!

I have built up a good amount on my Walgreens gift card this way and so I should have no OOP and the gift card will get credited with more $$ after I submit my monthy FAR items.  I can use that $$ for next months items.

I have been able to purchase some gift items this way, especially stocking stuffers, without spending any $ OOP.  This really helps keep the Christmas budget down.

You can get the coupon here.

Just a quick post to let you know that Kmart SuperCenters have it's Super Double Coupon Sale going on today 11/12/08 until 11/16/08.

A few things to note:
This is only at the Kmart SuperCenters

No Internet printed coupons

By-the-way I have not had any trouble doing a separate order when I have had more than 4 identical coupons.

Check out my shopping here.

IMCPL Book Sale

This weekend begins the November Book Sale at the Library Services Center. This is a great place to pick up books of all kinds! I have found great children's books, story tapes, homeschooling resources, large print books for Grandma, recipe books and so much more.

Pricing for the books:
Adult Hardbacks $2.00
Juvenile Hardbacks $1.00
Oversized Paperback Books $1.00
Paperback Books $.50
Juvenile Paperbacks $.25
Records, Tapes & CDs $.50 - 1.00
DVD's $2.00

If you want a better deal, wait for next weekend when they have the 1/2 price day on Friday and $5.00 a bag day on Saturday - but more on that later!

You can get the complete schedule of Booksales here.

Also - you cannot take strollers or carts into the center, so keep this in mind. I suggest taking a heavy duty canvass bag. I have a bag with wheels, that is not a "cart" so I use that when I go. Also I would suggest going Friday if you can. First thing Saturday it is quite a crazy zoo! It thins out a bit as you get toward lunch time. Several times I have dropped Hubby and kids off right up the street at the Children's Museum and went down to do my looking and then come back to join them when I was finished.

If you have been to the book sale and have any suggestions please post them below.

Veteran's Day

Today is Veteran's Day, so I'd like to give a very special Thank You to the Servicemen and women of the Military Forces! And to the families of those who serve our country - Thank You for your sacrifice also!

One way to tell the soldiers that we appreciate their hard work and sacrifice is to send them a postcard. You can send one for free thanks to LetsSayThanks.com  and it is easy too. Just click on the link below. You choose the postcard for many that have been created by children. You can choose from several nice prewritten messages or write your own and then click to send. Xerox takes care of the rest!

Menu Planning Monday

This is my first post with Menu Planning Monday, but I'm really trying to get better organized so I can get more done during the week.  Normally I have a loose menu plan for dinners and I just pick what sounds good for that particular night.  This week I'm going to try to do a little cooking ahead for busy nights when and if I have some extra time.

Here is my dinner plan for this week:

Monday - Potato Soup, homemade bread or rolls, salad

Tuesday - Homemade Mac & Cheese casserole w/ Chicken and Broccoli.

Wednesday - Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup, Homemade Rolls

Thursday - Baked Fish, Potatoes, steamed veggies

Friday - Pizza

Saturday - ? I can't think that far ahead this morning!

I will post some of my recipes later this week!  I'm trying a new recipe for potato soup in the crock pot, so I'll see how that is!  Also, the Mac and Cheese is great and a good way to use some of the canned milk you may have scored for free at Kroger.

Super Savings Saturday - Kroger, Aldi and More

I did our weekly shopping today.  I spent $42 at Aldi - but didn't take a photo. Nothing exciting there, just your basics:  Eggs, coffee, fruit, chicken, beans and more.
Next, I went to "Once Upon a Child" children's clothing resale.  I needed new church shoes for Baby Molly and Zachary (5 yrs old).  I took a grocery bag of clothing to sell to them - mostly baby item Molly has outgrown and no one I know could use.  I received $9.00 for those items and for $10 I was able to get a beautiful pair of boys black dress shoes and 3 pair of baby shoes!  My OOP was only $1.00 - YEA  If you've never been to Once Upon a Child I recommend it.  You can check them out here.

Lastly I went to Kroger and  thanks to Jamie at Thrifty in the Cincy I got $62.17 for only $3.57. She has some good posts on the Mega Event Sale and  I didn't have time to scour the ad so I just printed what she had gotten for free and took it and my coupons with me to the store.

You can see what I got in the photo.  The Cheerios, cake mix, pasta sauce and granola bars were not part of the sale but I had coupons sent to me from Kroger for these items for free!!! And I actually got 6 of the big waters but I didn't feel like dragging them all into the house!  When I got home I looked at my receipt and realized I was actually overcharged $1.00 - so it should have been around $2.57.

I may go back to Kroger before the sale is over if there are any coupons in this week's paper that will give me free items!

You might wonder what I will do with all the canned milk!  I will use it in Mac and Cheese also I am going to try it instead of my beloved Coffee-mate.

I also stopped by the Dollar Tree and picked up my 4 Sunday papers!  If you did know they sell Sunday papers on Saturday and Sunday for $1.00 each.  Read about it here.

Election Day Freebies!

Money Saving Mom has a post listing many election day freebies!  I can confirm that the Chick-fil-a on Southport Rd is giving away free chicken sandwiches with an I vote sticker!  I had mine for lunch - it was yummy!

Cheap Sunday Papers

Did you know you can get both the Saturday edition of the Sunday Star and the Sunday Star at local Dollar Tree stores for $1.00 each.  I have even found leftover papers there on Monday mornings if I forgot to get some on the weekend.

I try to buy 4 weekend papers so that I can stock up by combining sales and coupons - preferably double coupons!  It is just as easy for me to cut out 4 papers as 1.  I just sort the papers by correlating the pages and then I cut all 4 of the same pages at once.  It works well and goes pretty quickly.

You can also get printable coupons from the Indianapolis Star here.
