Muncie Children's Museum - Free Admission 1/31/09

Saturday 1/31/09: Free Admission - Muncie Children's Museum

Date: 1/31/2009
Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Just about an hour North East of Indianapolis is the Muncie Children's Museum.  This is a fun, small, family friendly museum.  It is a nice change from the very large Children's Museum of Indianapolis where we normally go.   My son loves it and asks often when we can go again!

On the last Saturday of the month the Muncie Children's Museum is FREE!  Now that gas prices aren't too bad it would make a great day out with the kids!

If you go, take a dollar (at least that's how much it was last time we went) for the gift store and your child can make a fun sand bottle to remember his day.  My son had a blast filling his bottle with fun colored sand.
During Free Saturdays at the Muncie Children's Museum visitors can come to the Museum free of charge all day, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Check out their website here.

This is often on sale for $2.00 for a 4 pack.  With coupon that is only $1.00 or .25 a cup!  We love this yogurt!

.... Like I Need Another Hole in My Head!

Really, I need another magazine, like I need another  hole in the head! (or like I need another bottle free of shampoo, or tube of toothpaste!)

BUT.....I couldn't resist signing up for a free year of Martha Stewart Living.

So if you need one more free magazine to add to your stack - my stack is in the "Throne Room"- go here and read Crystal's post.

Ok... back out to shoveling......

Update 10 pm:  This offer is no longer available.

Snowed In? Listen to a Book.

So what do your children like to do on a snowy day - after they've been outside to play and are good and worn out?  How about listening to a good book while playing inside?  If I put on a new,  good book, my son will play quietly while building with his Legos or Blocks for an amazing amount of time.  This can be a real sanity saver on a snowed in day!

There are a lot of sites that offer books in MP3 format.  It is not hard to find a good one to listen to.  We have really enjoyed listening to Heidi which we found here.

There are other great books available at this site including:

The King James Bible
Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan
Treasure Island  by  R. L. Stevenson
White Fang by Jack London
Emma by Jane Austen
The Wind in the Willows  by Kenneth Grahame
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Here are a few sites that have free Audio Books that you can listen to:

One of my son's favorite sites is TumbleBooks

TumbleBooks has some great online books for kids.  I would let you know, however, that some of the books are for older kids or deal with subjects I did not want my son to read about, so I selected the ones I liked and added them very easily to "Favorites"  and that way he can look at any books in the "Favorites".  He enjoys that site a lot.

To use TumbleBooks go here and you will see the TumbleBooks logo about half way down the library's  webpage.  You can just click on it and have fun!

Do you know of any good sites that offer free Audio Books? Let us know!  Leave a comment.

I think we might just listen to a good book and make a batch of cookies today!  Sounds like a nice snowy day to me.

Frugal Indy's New Look

I'm working on giving "Frugal Indy" a New Look! I hope you like it! I hope to have a few more additions and changes to the blog in days to come. I hope you'll be patient with me as things change - hopefully for the better! I would love to hear what you think about the the new look and if there is anything you would like to see added to Frugal Indy.

Also, I have changed the size of the page.  I would like to know if it is too big and anyone is not able to get the entire page on their computer screen.

If you would like a free background for your blog, there are some great ones here at "The Cutest Blog on the Block."   They have a lot of great ideas to spruce up your blog.

Sunday Meditations

Luke 12

27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

I just read a really funny post from the Coupon Diva!   In the Savvy Savings program, I talk about the concept of Stockpile Shopping - but this is not what I want you to go and do!

You can read Coupon Diva's post here.  You will get a good laugh!  I think we have all bought more that we really needed because it was a good deal - like the 5 boxes of Pop-tarts I once bought and later donated to the Boy Scouts - because we don't like them very much.

Here is another funny stockpile picture from I'm a Money Magnet.  After you get a giggle at all the TP she has, go here she has a really good post on organizing coupons.

Freebie of the Day

Did you stop by and get yourHomeschool Freebie of the Day?  Today it is a fun little book about the Goops.  It teaches manners and the kids can color it. There is also an audio book of the same story!

If you would like to get on the weekly mailing list of Homeschool Freebies go here.

You can also get a copy of a Homeschool Radio Program called "Plain Mr. President" here.  Courtesy of www.homeschoolradioshows.com

Here is some information about the program from their website:

PLAIN MR. PRESIDENT

It is a beautiful April day in 1789, and the four million citizens of the United States of America are preparing for their very first national holiday. These brand new citizens of a brand new nation are lined up along the great "Post Road" from Mount Vernon to New York, gathered in cheerful, excited groups... winding garlands of flowers on bridges and lampposts, toasting the future, and eagerly waiting to see General George Washington pass by in his carriage on his way to be inaugurated the first president of the United States of America.

Amidst all the cheers and rejoicing, only one figure seems glum and thoughtful, with the whole weight of the world resting on his shoulders... and that is Washington himself. A lot can go through a man's mind as he travels on a date with destiny. Listen to this great story of that first Inaugural Day, as originally presented on The Cavalcade of America, in 1941.

FREE BREAKFAST WEDNESDAYS!
Southport Road Chick-fil-a

One entree per person in the dining room, and one entree per car in the drive-thru between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Chick-fil-a is our favorite "fast food" restaurant.   We have found the one on Southport Road to be especially great!  They are always friendly and the food is great.  Not to mention the great inside playground that the kids love - especially on a cold day.

We love to go late for the free breakfast - around 10 am, by then the playground is pretty much empty!

By-the-way, my personal favorites are the chicken biscuit and the sausage, egg and cheese biscuit!

If you need directions to the Chick-fil-a, or if you would like to find the address of a Chick-fil-a near you, check here.

Note: Not all Chick-fil-a's are participating in this promotion.  So, if you don't live near the Southport, Rd Chick-fil-a, call your local Chick-fil-a before you go!

Sunday Meditations

 James 4:14

For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

This is so true!  I hit a milestone birthday #40 yesterday, and I wonder where the past 20 years flew off to?  This is a great verse to help keep me focused on the things that are truly important and lasting.  I hope it will be a blessing to you too.

Kmart Super Double Coupons Sale - up to $2 coupons!

Kmart is running the Super Double Coupon sale 1/14/09 thru 1/17/09.  You can get coupons with a face value up to $2.00 doubled!  That's $4.00 off!  If you need  to stock up, this is a good sale to do it at!

I have 2 receipts here from previous sales at Kmart. On 1 I paid $2.74  for $45.71 in items and on another I paid .35 cents for $9.62 in items.  Kmart tends to be more expensive for some items so I suggest you go there and only get the things you will get for free or at a  substantial  discount.  But if you stick to your coupon items only, you can really do well.

Washington Street Super Kmart has always participated in these sales,  but I recommend you call your store ahead of time to check.

Kmart's Coupon Rules:
  • 4 identical coupons/ items per order
  • 25 coupons total per customer per day (this is a change)
  • No Internet printed coupons
  • Coupon only doubles to the price of the item - no overages

I have learned a few things from these sales too:
  • Always watch as they scan your coupons!
  • If the coupon is for more than 1 item it will only double up to the price of 1 item. (For example $2.00 off 2 and 1 item costs $2.00 - it will only give you $2.00 instead of the $4.00 you have to pay to use the coupon.)  Ask them to correct the amount and give you full credit for the double coupon.  They have always been able to do this if I ask nicely!
  • Do multiple transactions if you have more that 4 of one item.
  • Pull the high $ coupons to the front of your envelopes so you can look easily.

Free Suave Coupon - Today Only

Go Here and follow the link to sign up for your coupon.  It will be mailed to you.

Stay-at-Home Challenge - Update 1/13/09

Here is a quick update in pictures of what I have been doing during my "Stay-at Home Challenge".    You can read more about my challenge here.  I am trying for the month of January to reduce the amount of time I spend couponing, shopping and being out of the house so I can get some things done and organized and save some  $ too.

Here are some things I've done:

Planned a Month of Meals.  I'm not holding myself to make the things on the exact day.  But if I switch a day I cross off what I made.  Also, sometimes we have more leftovers than planned so I don't cook the next day.  So I have really more than a month here.

Organized my Kitchen Cabinets and got rid of old spices.  I organized them in this drawer and can now see all the labels.

I organized my "Stash".  Most of the items in here I got for free at CVS, Walgreens, or Kmart.  I can now see what I've got enough of and what to look for, for free before I run out.

Cleaned out bathroom cabinets.  This was packed full of "Stash " stuff.  Now it is out of here and I can store only  a few items more neatly here.

Things I want to do yet this month:

After dinner is coloring time.  Both kids love to color and it is a good quiet activity.  I want to organize the craft items, paper, coloring books, etc, so we can find things more easily.

Here is a rolling cart that fits 12x12 scrapbook paper.  I want to organize my scrapbook and craft items in it.  I got it for 50% off at Meijer.

Okay - this is hard for me to show you.  My very messy make-up and hair drawer.  I still have a few drawers in the bathrooms to sort and get rid of stuff.  I want to finish this job.

So far, I've made 1 trip to Aldi for produce and a few other things and stopped at CVS for milk.  It's been hard for me to keep out of the couponing loop, but I've enjoyed the extra time and also enjoyed keeping inside where it is warm!

My Favorite Blogs

I thought I would tell you about some of the great Blog resources that I use to help me with my grocery/household shopping.  I have found some great ones that I can go to and the work is already done for me!  They do a great job of matching up the sales and coupons and even show and link me to printable coupons.

I just print what they have posted, take a look at it and highlight what I might want to pick up that week.  It saves me a ton of time scouring the sales ads.  I still take a quick peek at the ad to see if they missed anything!

One thing to keep in mind is that our Meijer and Kroger's change their ads on Thursdays.  We actually  have an advantage, because most other areas change ads the Sunday before we do.  So, if you look at the posting for Kroger or Meijer on Monday, you are getting a peek at the deals that you will have available on Thursday.  If you are going shopping Monday, and want to find out the best deals, look at the previous week's post. (Does that make sense?)  The advantage is that you can see if something you need will go on sale at the end of the week!  CVS and Walgreens change ads on Sundays so these are not affected.

One of my favorite blogs to check grocery store, CVS and Walgreens deals is BeCentsAble.  They have a feature called the Grocery Gathering where you can find pretty much any store you need.  They have several blogs linked for each store and you can click on them and check out the deals.  If you haven't checked out The Grocery Gathering I recommend it!

I'm sure there are great blogs out there I don't know about, so leave a comment and tell us about your favorite blog.   Ok, I'm sure Frugal Indy is your favorite (wink, wink) so let us know about your second favorite. =)

Black-Eyed Peas Soup

I made this soup on Saturday and it was really good so here is the recipe for you.  I'm sorry that I have no pictures for you.  It was nice and thick and we ate it over brown rice.  It made enough for 3-4 meals for us.  I froze some for later.

4-5 cups chicken stock
2-3 cups water or stock
1 1lb bag of dried black eyed peas

Chopped in small cubes the following:
2-3 celery stalks
1 lb ham (1 used turkey ham from Aldi
2-3 carrots
1 onion - chop finely
(put in as much of those as you like)

Wait on these for later:
1 large potato (peel and cube later)
Chicken bullion -if needed

Rinse and sort the beans.  Cover with water and bring to boil.  Boil on low for 2-3 minutes.  Cover and let sit 1 hour.  Rinse well and drain when done.

Put chicken stock, water, beans and cubed ham and veggies in big pot.  Bring to low simmer.   Turn to lowest heat and let cook slowly for several hours.  I cooked mine for about 6- all together.  Stir occasionally - but not too much so you don't smash all the beans.

I checked it in the afternoon and wanted it to be thicker so I took the lid off slightly so it could cook down, turned the heat up a bit and I added a chopped potato.  Also, I added a little bullion to flavor the broth a bit more - my chicken stock was a bit weak.

I cooked it until it was nice and thick and served it with homemade bread and over brown rice. The brown rice really make it good!  This is a very satisfying and filling soup!  One of my winter favorites.

Free President's Day Coloring Sheets

I've been planning to study the Presidents during our school time.  With both the Inauguration and President's Day coming up, now is the perfect time.  I just with I would have started awhile ago so we could read about 1 President a day and finish on President's Day.

I found some nice and free printable coloring sheets online.  The first one gives you pictures of all the Presidents that you can print out as a book.  The second one you must print as individual sheets.

If you know any good President's Day or Inauguration Day crafts,  I would love to know some! Leave a comment and let me know.

If you would like some Inauguration Pictures to color go here.  or here

Sunday Meditations

Isaiah 55:9-11

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

In David McCasland's book we have, at last, the story of this man's life and how, having honored God, God is now honoring him with the only fame that really matters.
