Thrifty Thursday - Free School Curriculum

I found this website that has downloadable curriculum. There are over 100 free items that you can download here.

So if you are a homeschool mom or maybe you just want something to supplement your child's education, or for them to do this summer during vacation you can check it out!

Here are a few examples of the free downloads from the Currclick website:

Go here for "Discoverers and Explorers"

"Looking for a wonderful book to supplement your student's study of Explorers? This FREE E-book is just the answer. A concise and beautifully illustrated book about early discoverers and explorers. A fascinating read! "

Go here for "All About My Family Notebook"

"Have your children create a notebook about the most important people in their lives, their family! Your child could interview individuals from your family to learn more about their heritage, add photos and write biographies of those who have passed on. There are pages for them to add personal information about themselves to pass down to their future children. They might choose to create a family tree on poster board or a wall with all the people they have learned about. Children love to hear stories about their family and this notebook could be a way to collect and keep these stories alive for future generations!"

There is a lot more for free. It looks like item for all ages from preschool and up! If you find a good item let us know!

Muncie Children's Museum - Free Admission 3/28/09

Just about an hour North East of Indianapolis is the Muncie
Children's Museum. This is a fun, small, family friendly museum. It is a nice change from the very large Children's Museum of Indianapolis where we normally go. My son loves it and asks often when we can go again!

On the last Saturday of the month the Muncie Children's Museum is FREE! Now that gas prices aren't too bad it would make a great day out with the kids!

If you go, take a dollar (at least that's how much it was last time we went) for the gift store and your child can make a fun sand bottle to remember his day. My son had a blast filling his bottle with fun colored sand.
During Free Saturdays at the Muncie Children's Museum visitors can come to the Museum free of charge all day, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Check out their website here.

Although we've started Kindergarten, we think that this is still a great list of read-aloud books!

Happy President's Day - a President's Day Song for You.

My son has worked very hard to learn the names of all 44 U.S. Presidents. I promised to put him on mom's web page if he could learn them all. He is 5 and a big ham so that was incentive enough for him to learn this little song.

So I hope you will enjoy this little video and if you would like to learn the names of the Presidents, I've included the words.

The 44 Presidents Song

Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison,
Monroe, Adams, Jackson, VanBuren,
William Henry Harrison, Tyler, Polk and Taylor,
Filmore, Pierce, Buchanan.

Lincoln, Johnson, Grant, Hayes,
Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland, Harrison,
Cleveland, McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt,
Taft and Woodrow Wilson.

Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, FDR,
Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, LBJ,
Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan,
Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama.

If you would like some free coloring sheets for President's Day check out my posts here and here.

Happy 200th Birthday President Lincoln!

Today we are celebrating the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln.  If you would like a coloring picture of President Abraham Lincoln, here are a few good sites to check.

Crayola coloring page   - this is a very nice picture of Lincoln!

More Lincoln Sheets:  Here,  here,   here and here.

Lincoln pages with various scenes from Lincoln's life here.

Some Civil War coloring pictures are here.

Lots of great coloring pages here including the Lincoln Memorial.

Are you getting ready for President's Day next week?

Here are some good President's Day Coloring sheets and activities.

Here is a coloring book you can print with the first 43 presidents.

Here is a coloring picture of President Obama you can add to the book.

My 5  year old son has been working on learning the names of the Presidents and I promised him that if he would learn them all I would post a video of him singing them for you.   He has worked hard to learn this and so here it is for you!

If you would like to learn the names of the 44 Presidents, here are the words to the song.

The 44 Presidents Song

Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison,
Monroe, Adams, Jackson, VanBuren,
William Henry Harrison, Tyler, Polk and Taylor,
Filmore, Pierce, Buchanan.

Lincoln, Johnson, Grant, Hayes,
Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland, Harrison,
Cleveland, McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt,
Taft and Woodrow Wilson.

Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, FDR,
Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, LBJ,
Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan,
Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama.

It works pretty well if you sing it in a peppy way.  My son like to shout it out when he gets to "William Henry Harrison" and also at "FDR" and "LBJ".  To make the last line work you have to add an extra beat.  It works if you slow the last line down a lot and start on the same note you ended with on "Reagan".

I think for the first time in my life I can say the Presidents.  I'm actually surprised how easily we learned them this way!

If you know any good resources for President's Day, share them with us in the comments below.

Snowed In? Listen to a Book.

So what do your children like to do on a snowy day - after they've been outside to play and are good and worn out?  How about listening to a good book while playing inside?  If I put on a new,  good book, my son will play quietly while building with his Legos or Blocks for an amazing amount of time.  This can be a real sanity saver on a snowed in day!

There are a lot of sites that offer books in MP3 format.  It is not hard to find a good one to listen to.  We have really enjoyed listening to Heidi which we found here.

There are other great books available at this site including:

The King James Bible
Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan
Treasure Island  by  R. L. Stevenson
White Fang by Jack London
Emma by Jane Austen
The Wind in the Willows  by Kenneth Grahame
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Here are a few sites that have free Audio Books that you can listen to:

One of my son's favorite sites is TumbleBooks

TumbleBooks has some great online books for kids.  I would let you know, however, that some of the books are for older kids or deal with subjects I did not want my son to read about, so I selected the ones I liked and added them very easily to "Favorites"  and that way he can look at any books in the "Favorites".  He enjoys that site a lot.

To use TumbleBooks go here and you will see the TumbleBooks logo about half way down the library's  webpage.  You can just click on it and have fun!

Do you know of any good sites that offer free Audio Books? Let us know!  Leave a comment.

I think we might just listen to a good book and make a batch of cookies today!  Sounds like a nice snowy day to me.

You can also get a copy of a Homeschool Radio Program called "Plain Mr. President" here.  Courtesy of www.homeschoolradioshows.com

Here is some information about the program from their website:

PLAIN MR. PRESIDENT

It is a beautiful April day in 1789, and the four million citizens of the United States of America are preparing for their very first national holiday. These brand new citizens of a brand new nation are lined up along the great "Post Road" from Mount Vernon to New York, gathered in cheerful, excited groups... winding garlands of flowers on bridges and lampposts, toasting the future, and eagerly waiting to see General George Washington pass by in his carriage on his way to be inaugurated the first president of the United States of America.

Amidst all the cheers and rejoicing, only one figure seems glum and thoughtful, with the whole weight of the world resting on his shoulders... and that is Washington himself. A lot can go through a man's mind as he travels on a date with destiny. Listen to this great story of that first Inaugural Day, as originally presented on The Cavalcade of America, in 1941.
