Sunday Meditations

Psalm 127

Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

I am so thankful for my 2 blessings!

Sunday Meditations

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
Each little flow'r that opens,

Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings.

Refrain:
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
The purple-headed mountain,
The river running by,
The sunset, and the morning
That brightens up the sky.

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
He made them ev'ry one:

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
The tall trees in the greenwood,
The meadows where we play,
The rushes by the water
We gather ev'ry day:

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well:

Homemade Cleaning Supplies - Powdered Laundry Detergent

Yesterday I posted a video from The Simple Dollar about Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent. You can check out that post for a link to a "recipe" to make your own liquid laundry detergent.

While doing some research on the subject, I have found that there are also "recipes" for homemade powdered laundry detergent.

Homemade powdered detergent seems like a more practical option to me. I have an 18 month old, who is just starting to walk and the thought of a large bucket of liquid in the laundry room is terrifying to me! She's just the right size to topple into it. Also, it would just be so much easier to store than the liquid!

I found a good article on Homemade Powdered Laundry Detergent by Felicia Williams at Suite 101.com.

Here is Felicia's recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 bar Fels Naptha Laundry Soap (equivalent of 1 cup grated)
  • ½ Cup 20 Mule Team Borax
  • ½ Cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda.
  • Container large enough to hold 2 cups of laundry detergent

Directions:

  1. Grate the Fels Naptha laundry soap with a grater or use a food processor. Approximately 2/3 of a bar of soap will make 1 cup of grated soap.
  2. Add the ½ cup of Borax and ½ cup of washing soda to the grated soap.
  3. Shake and/or mix well

Use:

One tablespoon of detergent is sufficient per load of wash. If you have a high-efficiency machine, you might want to experiment with using a little less detergent for normal loads. If your clothes come out feeling stiff, lower the amount of detergent. For clothes that are heavily soiled, add a teaspoon more of the detergent..

Yield:

The recipe yields 2 cups of laundry detergent. If you use 1 tablespoon per load, you will be able to wash 32 loads of clothes.

You can read Felicia's whole article with her comments here. She also comments on both liquid and powdered laundry detergent (she has made both) here in her blog Blulow.

I believe that this is where I will start with my experiment on homemade laundry detergent.

I wonder how it would come out with other soaps? I have seen recipes for liquid laundry detergent using Ivory, Pure and Natural, Zote and Fels-Naptha. Felicia says that she has used Ivory, Lever and Fels-Naptha and prefers the Fels-Naptha.

I read a good tip elsewhere - if you are not using a very hard bar of soap like Fels - Naptha, take the soap out of the wrapper for a few days to let it dry out and it will grate easier.

Here are some other links you might like to check out:

And another one here from Evening Shade Morning Latte.

If you have made a homemade powdered laundry detergent - I would love to hear from you with your recipe or comments on it's effectiveness! I have a 5 year old who is VERY good at getting dirty, so my laundry detergent has to actually work!

Tuesday Tip - Reader's Questions - Homemade Cleaning Supplies

Last week, I asked for a few questions from you. Stefano asked about homemade cleaning supplies - ones that actually work.

I have seen posts here and there on making your cleaning supplies, but since I usually find items like Windex and toilet bowl cleaner for free, I have not yet explored this as a way to save money.

One of the household cleaning items that it seems I cannot ever - EVER, get for free is laundry detergent. Laundry detergent is a big expense - even though I try to find it on sale and use coupons. It is an area that I would love to reduce my spending on!

I do a lot of laundry. There are only 4 of us - but my 5 year old seems to make as much laundry as the rest of us combined!

Now, I have to admit that making homemade supplies has not been on my frugal list of things to do - until I saw a video last week from Trent at The Simple Dollar. It gave me hope that I can both make laundry soap easily and save myself a lot of $ while I do it!

Here is the video:

You can go to Trent's video and post here. You can read an older post he did about making laundry detergent here - this one includes the ingredient list.

So what do you think? Has anyone made their own detergent and what type of results have you had? Also, have you made other homemade cleaners? What have the results been?

Menu Planning Monday 5/17/09 - Freezer Week Part 2

Last week I began trying to use up some odds and ends in the freezer. I had to make a few changes due to our schedule and so I continue this week using up these items.

Sunday: Spaghetti Pie

Monday: BBQ Beef Sandwiches

Tuesday: Turkey, Broccoli and rice Bake

Wednesday: Black eyed peas and ham soup

Thursday: Leftovers

Friday: Pizza and Salad

Saturday: Grill out, chicken or hot dogs

Not the most exciting menu plan, but I find that I need to do this every once in a while or I have to throw away items that get freezer burn.

Sunday Meditations

I've been wondering if I should start on an ark! It seems like we've had rain for 40 days and 40 nights! It's made me think of Noah, I'm thankful for the promise of the rainbow!

Genesis 7: 9-12

There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Genesis 9:12 - 17

And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:

And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.

Coupon Craziness

Have you been printing all the coupons out for Kraft products? There are some super great deals out there using those coupons.

Today I snagged Oscar Meyer hot dogs for .25 a pack at Meijer! I also got Ritz for .50 a box! Free Kraft Mayo and more! Check out the coupons at Meijer Mealbox (at the bottom of post) and combine them with the manufacturer's coupons I will give you a link to the printable coupons below.

Also, check out The Grocery Get-Together for some great coupon match-ups!

Here are a few other links to check out: Bargain Briana, Lizzy's Language, Money Saving Mom,
Mommy Snacks, Macomb Money Savers has a GREAT match-up!, Cincinnati Cents.

Here is an awesome list of 18 coupon sources from Money Saving Mom and Deal Seeking Mom. You can print more than 1 copy of the coupons by going to the different grocery store sites. Usually, you can print 2 copies from each site, although a few sites I was not able to print any additional coupons from.

Library Booksale - May 15 - 17

This weekend there is a Library Booksale at the Library Services Center. This is a great place to find books for yourself or your children.

I like to have books available for the kids to look at, and if I've only paid .50 or $1.00 for the book, I don't feel bad if a page or two gets ripped while they develop a love for books.

As you see, we love books!

Here is more info. about the book sale:

Where?
Library Services Center
2450 N. Meridian St.
Indianapolis, IN 46208

When?
May 15 - 17
5/15/09 5:30 - 7:30 pm *Friends Night
5/16/09 10 am - 5 pm
5/17/09 12 - 4 pm

Pricing for the books:
Adult Hardbacks $2.00
Juvenile Hardbacks $1.00
Oversized Paperback Books $1.00
Paperback Books $.50
Juvenile Paperbacks $.25
Records, Tapes & CDs $.50 - 1.00
DVD's $1.00 - $3.00

You can find out more here.

Also - you cannot take strollers or carts into the center, so keep this in mind. I suggest taking a heavy duty canvass bag. I have a bag with wheels, that is not a "cart" so I use that when I go.

First thing Saturday it is quite a crazy zoo! It thins out a bit as you get toward lunch time. Several times I have dropped Hubby and kids off right up the street at the Children's Museum and went down to do my looking and then come back to join them when I was finished.
