I stopped in at the CVS at Thompson Rd. and Arlington Rd. today and at the front of the store they had CVS plastic wrap 250 sq ft rolls for 90% off - they were only .38 cents a roll!

I don't know if any other CVS has this marked down - but what a great deal!

How to Work a "Mega Deal" at CVS

There are many good CVS tutorials out there for you to read. If you are new to CVS shopping and the world of Extra Care Bucks, fondly known as ECBs, I suggest that you start by reading CVS 101 and making CVS Work for You.

You can also read my Top 10 CVS Tips and a few other tips here, here and here.

So, for those of you who are ready to move on to an advanced degree in CVSing, I would like to simply share with you how to work what I would consider a "Mega Deal".

A "Mega Deal" for me is when I am able to purchase a large amount of items for little OOP and get as much or more back than my OOP in ECBs.



















My CVS Mega Deal $103.82 for $1.98 OOP


So here is the rundown of my deal:

I purchased $103.82 of items.

Istarted the deal with 0 ECBs.

My final OOP is $1.98. I spent $11.56 OOP today, but will submit a $10 rebate on that so my final OOP will be $1.98 (if you count the stamp I will use).

I earned around $23 in ECB's, but ended the deal leaving with $18 in ECBs for later.


Let me walk you throught the steps I take to assemble a deal like this.

1. Collect coupons - I was able to do this because I had the coupons to do it!

2. Scan your Extra Care Card. I received a $15 off $75 coupon from the magic scanner this week. This really helped me! I also had a $2.50 off $10 pain relief coupon from another scan.

3. Know what you are trying to accomplish. I had the $15 off $75 coupon and decided to see if I could actually spend $75 at CVS without really spending anything. I also needed ECBs and didn't have much OOP to work with on this deal.

4. Know where to look. I have often said that the Internet is the #1 resource for saving both time and $. When I was researching for this deal I checked out what other bloggers had listed on their CVS posts. Also, these bloggers often match up coupons with the deals making it even better for me. Here are the blogs I checked for this deal:

5. Work out the deal by making a list of all the items you can get for free, or almost free.

I make a worksheet, at the top I list the items I plan to buy, on the bottom left is the ECBs I will earn, and on the bottom right are the coupons to subtract. That way I can keep a running total of what I've spent and my OOP.

I just keep working toward the total desired - in this case $75. Remember the total is before coupons.

Here are some example items that I used to make the deal:

I had 6 "Vitamin Water 10" coupons for $1.00 off each and they were on sale for $1.00 each so that is $6 toward the $75 total - but with a 0 OOP.

Excederin is on sale for $1.99, I found 2 printable $2.00 off Excederin coupons on MSM. You can print each twice by hitting the back button a few times after it prints. So, that gave me 4 coupons adding another $7.96 toward that total of $75 and the coupons totalled $8.00. So still no $ OOP.

The Pringles were .88 ea and there was a 1.00/2 coupon making them .38 ea OOP.

I was planning to get diapers in this deal, then I remembered I have a ton of formula coupons that the formula companies send you when you have a baby. I actually don't use formula, but I was able to get the 5 bottles of formula for free. So there was $25 toward the $75 with 0 OOP. The best thing about that was it earned me a $10 ECB. The formula can get donated to someone who will use it!

6. Have some back-up items. Be prepared for a change at the store if needed. I planned to get some of the Revlon make-up, but it was not at the price I wanted. So I got the Brut deoderant since my supply is getting a bit low and my hubby likes that kind.

7. Be patient, take your calculator and go to the store! It helps to have the deal really worked out before you go. But when you get there recheck the deal and be patient. My cashier had to ring up my main deal 3 times because she was new and kept making errors.



In this deal I purchased all the items except the Milk, juice and 1 shaving cream in 1 transaction. I then purchased the 2nd shaving cream using the ECB from the first transaction. Then I purchased the 2 milk and the juice using the $2 ecb from the toothpaste and the $3.40 ECB from the shaving cream. I thought the sign said that the juice was 2/4.00 and my OOP would have been .50 for it - but it was actually 2/6.00, so I paid a bit extra but I was happy with the overall deal.

Here's the Photo of my Mega Deal. I had less than $12 OOP for this deal and can submit a rebate of $10 too.

So less than $2 for this and I got around $23 in ECB.

Working a CVS Mega-Deal

I stopped into CVS yesterday to scan my cards for coupons. There is a CVS on the corner and when we pass, I like to pop in occasionally to see what the magic coupon scanner will spit out at me.

I can only do this coupon run when my hubby is with me, or if I am alone, that way I can run in and out. It's too much work to get 2 kids in and out of car seats for a 2 minute trip to the coupon scanner.

When I scanned my card yesterday, I received a $15 off a $75 purchase. At first I thought - "Yea, right! - No way can I use this!". But then I decided to take it as a challenge and see what kind of deal I could work.

Last night I worked out a deal scenario. If they have what I want in stock, I should only have to pay a few dollars out of pocket and wind up with over $20 in ECB's.

I'm planning to go today to work the deal. I will let you know how it goes and what I got and what I paid.

Also, I will show you how that I work a "Mega-Deal". These kind of deals come along a few times a year and I like to make the most of them when I can!

Tuesday Tip - My "$5.00 CVS Lesson"

I learned a valuable, "$5.00 CVS Lesson" this weekend. Here it is -Print any CVS coupon that CVS emails to you. Even if you think you will not use it! Just print it!

Last week, I received a $5 off $25 coupon in the email (good through 4/5). I didn't really see any great CVS deals worth $25 and so I never bothered to print the coupon. In the CVS ad for this weekend there is a good diapers/wipes deal and I could have used the $5 off $25 coupon for that deal!

So, I went to the email this morning to print it. I knew the coupon itself was expired - but CVS always takes expired coupons, so no big deal - wrong! The coupon was gone. You can only print the coupon until the expiration date.

"Good-bye President Lincoln." (That's me saying good bye to the extra $5.00 I will now have to pay for the diaper deal!)

Well, this has been a valuable $5.00 lesson for me, because I still need the diapers! But next time CVS sends me a nice little email, I will print any coupon they send me whether I think I need it or not!

Tuesday Tip

Did you know that you can get a rain check at CVS?  If you go and the item you want to get for "Free with ECB" or at it's current sale price just happens to be out - ask for a rain check!

Sometimes, when a deal is really good, it is hard to find it in stock - unless you hit it at the right time.  When you get your rain check make sure that they note the $ and ECB's.  

CVS is able to go in and manually print ECB's when needed, which is what they do when you redeem a rain check.

CVS rain check's do not expire - which is really nice!

Are you a new CVS Shopper? Maybe you are giving CVS a try after attending a Savvy Saving program and are learning the CVS ropes.  Today I am going to share some CVS tips with you.

If you are a veteran CVS shopper and have some tips you would like to share with us please leave a comment with your tip!

Frugal Indy's Top 10 CVS Tips

1.  Register your CVS Extra Care Card online and receive a  $4 off $20 coupon.  You will also receive other coupons occasionally including $4/20 and $3/15.  If you get an email coupon you can only use it 1 time.

2. Scan your card at the price checker for more coupons when you go into CVS.

3.  Scan your card often for coupons. If you live/work near a CVS and it is convenient for you to make a quick stop during the week - just stop in and scan your card for more coupon opportunities.  I have even gotten the occasional  $5/15  coupon from the "magic scanner".

4.  Roll Your ECB's. When you plan your CVS shopping transaction or "deal" as I call it, start with the ECB earning items first - make sure you get your ECB's so you can go back again and have more fun!

5.  Use your expired CVS coupon.  Many CVS's accept expired CVS coupons for 2 weeks past the expiration date or until the coupon "beeps" in the register, so always give your CVS coupons - even if they are expired.  I have never had an expired CVS coupon refused.

6.  Look for CVS  $3/15 coupons.  Keep a diligent watch for legit $3/15 and $4/20 coupons that can be printed from online newspapers and magazines.  You can use one of these on each transaction that you do.

Please make sure you are printing from an original source.  CVS coupons that are in PDF format or scanned in may be altered and fraudulent.  If you are printing from an original source (the actual online newspaper)  you know the coupon is valid.  My favorite place to check is I Heart CVS.  But be aware that not all coupons posted to this site are from original sources.

7.   Coupon order is important.  If you are using a $3/15 or $4/20 type CVS coupon - give that coupon to the cashier first - before you give any Manufacturer Coupons.  That way you are still above the required transaction minimum.

8.  Maximize your savings. When you are using a $3/15 type coupon, you only need to meet the transaction minimum ($15) before coupons at CVS.  So, maximize your savings by filling up that $15 order with items that you will get "Free with ECB" or are free with coupons.  Use any overage you have to buy things you need (milk, paper products, etc) and reduce your grocery bill.   

9.  Make a "CVS" envelope and keep it in your coupon box or coupon binder. Keep one of your CVS ECB cards (you should get a few key tags and a card when you sign up), all your CVS coupons and your ECBs in it.  When you go to CVS, it will make it easier to find what you need.

10.  Each adult in your home should have a CVS Extra Care Card.  Because I saved so much at CVS last year, they've decided not to send my card those nice coupons - so this year I am using my husband's card.  You are not limited to 1 card per household, and you can greatly increase your coupon opportunities by having 1 card per adult in your house.  However, ECB items are limited on a "per household" basis, not "per card"  so please keep this in mind if you do have more than 1 card.

I spent approximately $250 last year at CVS.  At CVS I "purchased" almost all my family's personal care items (toothpaste, razors, make-up etc.) a good part of our milk purchases, and almost all my diapers and wipes for the baby and also occasionally some household items such as TP, fabric softener and tissues).  (I could only find this receipt from early December, so the totals might be a bit more on the savings.  If I find one from later one, I'll update this.)

The New Year has begun for CVS spending and I wonder if I will do as well this year.  I now have the convenience of a CVS around the corner, so it is easier to stop in for other things now and not have my shipping trip so carefully planned out.
